An agent that can take actions needs stronger safeguards than a tool that only produces text. Guardrails are what make agentic AI safe enough to trust with real work.
Give the minimum permissions
Allow the agent to access only the systems and data it needs for its task. Read-only access is a sensible starting point, with write access added where it is justified.
Keep a person in the loop
Require human approval for anything involving payments, contracts, deleting data or messages to customers, at least until the agent has proven reliable.
Set clear limits
- Caps on spending, volume or number of actions
- Lists of allowed and blocked tools
- Timeouts so a stuck task cannot run indefinitely
Log and review
Record what the agent did and why. Logs make it possible to investigate mistakes, improve prompts and demonstrate accountability.
Test before launch
Try the agent on realistic examples, including awkward and unexpected ones, before it touches live systems.
Protect data and follow local rules
Decide what information may be sent to external AI services, and check the rules for the markets you serve, such as the UAE, Europe and Canada.
