Behind every AI agent is a simple loop: understand the goal, decide the next step, act, look at the result and repeat. Four building blocks make that loop work.
1. A language model as the reasoning engine
The model interprets instructions, weighs options and decides what to do next. It provides the flexibility to handle requests that were not written out in advance.
2. Planning
Given a goal, the agent breaks it into steps and orders them. If a step fails or new information appears, it can revise the plan.
3. Tools
Tools are how an agent affects the real world. They can be searches, database queries, spreadsheets, email, calendars, or your own business software connected through APIs. The tools you allow define what the agent can and cannot do.
4. Memory and context
Short-term memory keeps track of the current task. Longer-term memory can store preferences, past results or company knowledge so the agent does not start from zero each time.
The safety layer
Reliable agents also include permissions, limits on spending or actions, logs of everything done, and approval steps for sensitive changes.
